"THE VENμS PROJECT: THE FIRST AUTONOMOUS ELECTRICALLY PROPELLED MISSION IN LOW EARTH ORBIT"

The Israeli-French VENμS scientific-technological mission is a joint project of Israel´s Space Agency (ISA) and CNES. It includes two major experiments: in-flight tests of solar electric propulsion in low Earth orbit, and high-resolution, multispectral remote sensing of the Earth. The first experiment comprises the tests of a propulsion system with Israel Hall thrusters (IHET) commanded by a completely autonomous onboard control system. It will propel an inter-orbital transfer from the initial LEO 710 km high orbit to the final orbit of 420 km altitude and maintain the latter orbit. The mission profile will thus consist of three stages:

  1. Multispectral earth observations from the initial orbit
  2. Inter-orbital transfer
  3. Multispectral earth observations from the final orbit

The Technion is involved in developing the orbital control algorithms intended for onboard implementation to autonomously perform intensive inter-orbital maneuvers in low Earth orbits. This mission will pioneer the field of low-orbit, electrically propelled missions.

Technion activities in electric propulsion will be presented, as well as the algorithms for autonomous navigation and orbital control along with results of computer simulations. The algorithms cover the needs of a wide variety of future electrically propelled LEO missions
