Despite the complexity and high costs of chip design, it is essential to offer students the opportunity to gain practical experience early on in order to combat the shortage of skilled workers in this industry. The community initiative "Tiny Tapeout" provides bachelor students with a cost-effective opportunity to bring their own designs onto a chip. The Computer Engineering group, led by Prof. Dr. Matthias Jung, has successfully developed a chip for the second time.

DRAM's power consumption is a major concern in todays systems. Therefore, we are really happy that the committee of HiPEAC’s RAPIDO workshop acknowledged this with the best paper award for our brand new Power Simulator DRAMpower 5. As off-chip memory accesses nowadays dominate the overall power consumption of many compute platforms, accurate DRAM power simulation models are an important tool for system designers. Unfortunately, existing open-source models only support older generations of DRAM standards, while current system designs mainly rely on the newest generation including DDR5, LPDDR5 or HBM3.

Im Rahmen der Vorlesung „Amateurfunk“ von Prof. Dr. Matthias Jung (DL9MJ) an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg unternahm am 08.11.2024 eine Gruppe von Studierenden einen Ausflug zum Amateurfunkzentrum Unterfranken. Die Lehrveranstaltung zielt darauf ab, insbesondere Studierende des Studiengangs Luft- und Raumfahrtinformatik auf die Amateurfunkprüfung der Klasse E vorzubereiten.

Together with researchers at University of Hannover, University of Braunschweig and RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, we presented a study on phyiscal memory fragmention in Linux, which we think is going to become an increasing problem for huge-frame availability, DRAM energy consumption and cloud memory pricing. The joint paper was awarded with the best paper award.

Wenn neue Anwendungen, etwa für KI, auf Computern langsamer laufen als erwartet, ist oft der Speicher daran schuld. Ein neues Forschungsprojekt arbeitet an einer Lösung. Die Leitung hat der Würzburger Informatiker Matthias Jung.

Matthias Jung, Professor am Institut für Informatik, ist erster VDE Vertrauensdozent an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. Seine Aufgabe: Studierenden die Bereiche Elektro- und Informationstechnik näherbringen.

Am 07.06.2024 stelle Prof. Matthias Jung bei der Auftaktveranstaltung von Chipdesign Germany in Hannover das neue BMBF Projekt "DE:RAMSys - Open Source Simulationswerkzeuge für Halbleiterspeicher" vor. Das Konsortium besteht aus der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, der Rheinland-Pfälzischen Technischen Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) und dem Fraunhofer IESE.

The Computer Engineering group will present two papers on the International Conference on Embedded Computer Systems: Architectures, Modeling and Simulation (SAMOS) on Samos Island in Greece.

Amateurfunk – interessiert sich heute in Zeiten von Smartphone und Internet via Satellit eigentlich noch jemand für dieses Thema? Speziell unter jungen Menschen? Offensichtlich ja, wie die Vorlesung „Amateurfunk“ beweist, die Matthias Jung, Inhaber der Professur für Technische Informatik am Lehrstuhl für Informatik XVII der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU), im Wintersemester 2023/24 erstmals angeboten hat.
