In Search of the Perfect Structure

Abstract

Analysis and design are essential activities for engineers. During the design phase, engineers must balance constraints and optimize resources to meet specific goals. These problems can be complex, requiring quick evaluation of multiple solutions and effective data representation. When exact solutions are unavailable, heuristic approaches often provide valuable alternatives. Heuristic artificial intelligence approaches often tackle complex problems using nature-inspired algorithms and adaptive mechanisms. The design process creates a vast space of potential solutions, making design space exploration (DSE) crucial for identifying feasible and optimal designs. In this talk, I will present my research on understanding DSE through optimization in two areas: human figure skeletons and RNA secondary structures. Despite their differences, these applications offer opportunities for cross-disciplinary insights. This research aims to advance computational design in both molecular and artistic contexts.

Bio:

Prof. Dr. Herbert H. Tsang is a full professor of computing science and mathematics at Trinity Western University in Canada, where he directs the Applied Research Lab.
