The National Collection of Aerial Photography - from World War II to the Filming Industry
I will present recent developments at one of the world’s largest collections of historic aerial imagery, the National Collection of Aerial Photography (NCAP). The NCAP contains over 26 million aerial photographs covering places throughout the world, many of which were collected for reconnaissance purposes during World War II and the Cold War. NCAP documents and digital services are used on a daily basis by geographers, historians, bomb disposal experts, governmental agencies, media companies, universities and many others.
I will give specific insight of the archive’s various uses ranging from detecting unexploded ordnance on digitised aerial photographs, 3D model creation, research for the filming industry and many more. These uses let the general public travel back in time and are most effective when traditional records are combined with modern digital techniques. There are still many million undiscovered images in the archive and many new potential uses.
