More efficient waste separation at JMU
New waste stations in buildings M2, Z6 and Zwinger 32a
Sustainable waste management is a key priority at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU). As part of the WueMue transformation experiment, new, uniformly labeled waste stations were introduced on January 27, 2025, in Buildings M2 (Informatics), Z6 (Central Lecture and Seminar Building), and Zwinger 32a. This initiative aims to optimize waste separation and further promote environmental awareness.
These measures are based on the findings of a recent university-wide survey and include the installation of central collection stations for residual waste, plastic, and paper. At the same time, decentralized waste bins have been removed from seminar rooms, lecture halls, and offices to ensure consistent and efficient waste separation. Additionally, large waste containers for all relevant waste types have been made available at the buildings’ disposal centers to facilitate proper waste management by cleaning staff.
Clearly labeled and strategically placed waste stations not only improve recycling but also reduce the workload for cleaning personnel. The implementation of these measures will be evaluated over a two-month period and adjusted as needed. In the long term, further steps are planned to enhance awareness and engagement in sustainable waste disposal among the university community.
