JMU Space Observatory

Project Overview

The JMU Space Observatory was built in 2023 as part of the KI-SENS project and was created in collaboration with the student space club WüSpace e. V..
The observatory is located on the roof of the Geography Building (G1) at the University of Würzburg. The approximately two-meter dome houses two powerful telescopes (11“ and 14” Schmidt-Cassegrain) on an azimuthal mount.
In addition to its original purpose, the detection and orbit determination of objects such as satellites or space debris in orbit, it is also used to measure the orbit of asteroids and near-Earth objects (NEOs) and for astrophotography.
The observatory is registered with the Minor Planet Center of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) under the code D69.
