In practice, remote maintenance of industrial manipulators is performed via telephone support. Recent research in context of “Industry 4.0” or Industrial Internet use internet technologies and Augmented Reality to enhance the situation awareness of external experts. With remote analysis, maintenance scenarios like failure detection and optimization can be performed without traveling to the production site. In this paper, we present a mobile Augmented Reality architecture with a tablet PC and a high precision localization system. Remote experts can walk around the virtual plant to understand the production process and the machine context. We compare this method with other methods using virtual reality and video.

In the present work, a simulation system is proposed that can be used as an educational tool by physicians in training basic skills of minimally invasive vascular interventions. In order to accomplish this objective, initially the physical model of the wire proposed by Konings has been improved. As a result, a simpler and more stable method was obtained to calculate the equilibrium configuration of the wire. In addition, a geometrical method is developed to perform relaxations. It is particularly useful when the wire is hindered in the physical method because of the boundary conditions. Then a recipe is given to merge the physical and the geometrical methods, resulting in efficient relaxations. Moreover, tests have shown that the shape of the virtual wire agrees with the experiment. The proposed algorithm allows real-time executions, and furthermore, the hardware to assemble the simulator has a low cost.

Currently, a trend towards distributed small satellite missions is emerging using cooperating satellites to achieve joint mission objectives, e.g. for earth observation. Communication is a key feature when cooperation between satellites is desired. Typically those satellite networks are affected by slow data rates, high packet loss and intermittent connectivity. To address these challenges the store-and-forward approach of the delay tolerant networking (DTN) concept is investigated in this article. Network simulations of typical scenarios were carried out and evaluated to derive statements about the applicability of the DTN approach to networks in low earth orbits.

This paper presents a new concept for hardware-in-the-loop testing of formation flying control of small satellites. Instead of commonly used mobile units based on air cushion principle moving on a frictionless surface, units based on wheeled mobile robots are proposed. Recent formation flying missions as well as presumable future applications are used to derive requirements for formation control algorithms and to justify according test demands. Common concepts of formation control testbeds are presented by examples and analyzed with respect to their value for evaluating the derived control needs, especially with respect to small satellites. Their assets and drawbacks are outlined. In order to complement the drawbacks the new testbed concept is derived. Its benefits, especially scalability, long-term and high-precision simulations, are depicted. Last, a combination of the mobile robot based testbed concept with stationary robotic manipulators with 6 degrees of freedom is proposed to add 3D out-of-plane motion for particular satellites and thus enabling 3D formation scenarios.
